Holland America's MS Oosterdam paying a visit to Victoria, as she does every Saturday this summer. A lot of upgrades have been done to our piers to accomodate such large vessels...

MS Oosterdam facts: Length overall 936 feet; Beam (width) 105.8 feet; Cruising speed up to 24 knots; passenger capacity 1,916; crew 817; launched in 2003 and registered in the Netherlands.

A thick blanket of fog rolled over parts of Victoria for a while today and the deep, hypnotic sound of the lighthouse fog horns could be heard echoing in the distance. I loved it.

I didn't have the camera with me today, so I'm bending the rules by posting this photo I took a couple of summers ago. This is the lighthouse at the end of the Ogden Point breakwater. The day I took the photo started out just as foggy as today was, and like today the fog lifted and we ended up with a very nice afternoon.

Like any city or town anywhere in the world, Victoria has it's fair share of colourful local artists...

There's no finer meal on a warm summer night than cold potato salad, tortellini salad, and cracked pepper breaded chicken wings. Mmmmmm Mmmmm...

I spent my Saturday afternoon putting up shelving in the utility room as well as organizing all of our tools and some of my painting gear. It took two attempts to put up those shelves because I had issues with the drywall anchors, but in the end it all came together nicely...

So we bought this cool 5x7' shag rug for our living room, and have discovered that our cat will not walk on it. Here, he was playfully chasing Megan around the condo and just stopped dead at the rug...

He's a funny cat.

I got 3 free t-shirts today from the liquor store I've been painting this week. I'm not going to hold my breath for some free booze, but it would be nice...

Sure, I no longer live in Alberta or drink Alberta Distillers products, but the shirts were free, and they're actually well made, so I politely accepted them. If anything, they'd be great  work shirts. Note that they're packaged like hockey pucks. With Megan's assistance, I documented how we unwrapped one of them...

*Bonus picture A:
The shirt was tightly rolled from top to bottom, then spiraled into the puck shape.

*Bonus picture B:

Voila! One large t-shirt. It states on the package that it will take a couple of washes to get the wrinkles out.

Victoria's landmark Capital Iron building, built in 1863...

According to local history books, this building started out as a flour and rice mill then became a scrap iron depot. Ships would be tied up to the docks out back and hardware from the ships would be salvaged and sold. About 80 years ago the building became the store now known as Capital Iron. While they no longer sell old scrap from ships, they do carry all sorts of hardware, camping gear, kitchenware, Barbeque's, and so much more. And they have a neat collection of antique mariner's equipment down in the basement too!

There was a big classic car show in Victoria's Inner Harbour this weekend that prominently featured the iconic '32 Ford Coupe. You didn't have to look very hard to see them cruising all over town...

I want this guy's job...

I took this photo exactly 3 years ago to the day, just hours before having my interview for the painting job I still hold to this day. I had just moved to this city a couple weeks prior and was still feeling like a tourist. I was inspired to post this today after watching these little "pickle boats" cruise up and down the harbour all day while I was at work. I like my job, but I still think driving one of these would be cool. I have yet to actually take a trip on one!

I found this old picture of my great grandfather and grandfather in a book I just got today...

The limited edition book (published up in my hometown of Campbell River) is about the history of the logging industry on the BC Coast, and features pictures and stories of some of my relatives. Now while I'm all about saving trees, I share the same hard working spirit my grandfathers had - I just work in a different trade. I never knew them when they were alive, so it's cool to have this little insight into their lives. I'm going to post a more detailed blog about this on my main blog.

A nice early photo of the day. Usually I do this after work or supper, but the sunrise this morning was so nice I couldn't wait to share it...

I'm so thrilled to have oak trees outside my balcony instead of a parking lot and the neighboring building. Have a wonderful day, my friends!

This statue sits on a bluff in the back yard of the house I've been working on this week. She kept tripping me out because if I saw her out of the corner of my eye I'd think she was a real woman...

Side note: I really liked working up in the Royal Oak area this week. I'm usually near or within sight of the water and it was nice to be up in the forest. The walk to the jobsite from the bus station first thing in the morning was so peacefull and quiet. One can easily forget they're still within city limits.

My concrete ball. I actually made this last summer at work during a lunch break and rediscovered it while unpacking some boxes today. The concrete I made it from is the quick-set type that you just add water to. I had some left over that would have gone to waste, so at my friend's suggestion I made a ball by compressing and rolling it in my gloved hands until it was as round as I could get it. It's not quite perfectly round, but I still like it. It's like holding a little tiny planet in the palm of my hand.

The penny is just there for a size reference.

Well, looks like summer has finally arrived...

I literally just took this photo no more than 10 minutes before posting. I shouted: "Hey! There's my picture of the day!" as I grabbed the camera and dove into the living room from the den. Hey, the rest of Canada has been enjoying nice temperatures, so I should be allowed to celebrate a little when we finally get our turn.
